Why do most approaches fail to protect our privacy and security

Fortified Privacy is a data-driven organisation that focuses on the missing link in modern privacy solutions – the people who hold the keys.

People are the number one target for cyber attacks.

98% of cyber attacks rely on social engineering, like masquerading as a trusted contact to encourage people into clicking malicious links or capture login credentials. In Australia, the top 3 cybercrime types for both individuals and businesses all rely on human error.

Tick-box approaches are the default.

We looked for 360 solutions that adequately addressed users’ needs but the more we looked, the more we were shocked at what we found. We gathered research and conducted numerous interviews, but we discovered that nearly all solutions were ‘tick-box approaches’ to compliance even from the big players in cybersecurity. We learned that the security of most individuals and organisations rely on flimsy systems –  a pop-up box that’s easily dismissed, a buried HR policy or a 10 minute multiple choice exercise completed once a year.  The most frequent response we received was, “we know we should do better, but we don’t know how. Can you teach us?”

We’re more interconnected and more vulnerable than ever.

Whether you’re an individual, a small or large business, the human factor remains the same.

The interconnected nature of our organisations and our private lives mean that we need to be alert, aware and practise good cyber-security habits – or the dominoes can start to fall. A single mistaken click, shared password or email can easily trigger a cascade of access – putting both your personal and professional communities at risk.

We can all do better - and we must.

Many cyber attacks exploit unthinking or ‘seemingly harmless’ habits of individuals, and we have found that IT professionals or security experts were no exception to the rule.  Cybercrime is up at least 23% in Australia in 2023. With the average cost of cybercrime per report is up 14% in 2023, it’s time for individuals and organisations to get serious about a 360 approach to their security and privacy needs.
